Start Up Loans

Are you starting a new business, or have you been trading less than five years?

A Start Up Loan is a government-backed personal loan for business purposes. It can be a powerful tool, when used at the right time.

Key Features

  • borrow up to £25,000 per applicant
  • a fixed interest rate of 7.5%
  • repayments over 1–5 years
  • access to mentoring for successful applicants

Why timing matters

Start Up Loans are not right for everyone, and timing matters.

Our role is to help you understand:

  • whether a Start Up Loan makes sense now
  • what preparation is needed before applying
  • what alternatives exist if it doesn’t

We are a credit broker, not a lender.

Formal assessment and lending decisions sit with the official Start Up Loans programme and accredited Business Support Partners.

Readiness Assessment

Before applying

Starting a business can feel like there’s pressure to move quickly, especially when funding feels like the next step.

Goodman Corporate will support you to prepare properly, understand your options, and move forward with confidence whether that means applying for a Start Up Loan now, later, or not at all.

Preparation

Many Start Up Loan applications slow down or stall, not because the idea is wrong, but because preparation wasn’t finished yet.

Readiness is about:

  • Document consistency
  • Clear sales assumptions
  • Personal affordability
  • Understanding how the business will operate day to day

We help you understand whether you’re ready and what support might help first.

Core Documents

Business Plan

Cash Flow Forecast

Cash Flow Forecast

Business plan with goodman green overlay

What you’re doing, who it’s for, and how it works.

A clear explanation of what you’re offering, who it’s for, how customers will find you and how the business will operate day to day.

Cash Flow Forecast

Cash Flow Forecast

Cash Flow Forecast

UK cash with Goodman Green overlay

Shows how money is expected to move in and out of the business, including, income, costs, loan funding, repayments and owner drawings.

Tip: This must align with your business plan not contradict it.

Sales Assumptions

Cash Flow Forecast

Personal Survival Budget

Assessors are not looking for big numbers or ambitious forecasts.

They are looking for clear, explainable assumptions that link your plan, your forecast, and your evidence together.

Personal Survival Budget

Loan Purpose and Evidence

Personal Survival Budget

personal survival budget with goodman green overlay

Your personal income and household costs. Start Up Loans assess personal affordability, not just the business.

A breakdown of personal income, household costs and existing  commitments.

This helps assess whether repayments would be manageable.

Loan Purpose and Evidence

Loan Purpose and Evidence

Loan Purpose and Evidence

What the loan would be used for. A clear list of what you intend to spend the loan on and quotes or cost breakdowns for larger items (e.g. equipment, vehicles, setup costs).

Estimates are not always sufficient -  evidence matters.

Personal Bank Statements

Loan Purpose and Evidence

Loan Purpose and Evidence

bank statements with goodman green over lay

Usually the most recent 3 months showing income, outgoings and existing financial commitments.

Important: Statements should broadly reflect what’s shown in your personal budget.

What you should know

Rushing can cause delays

In the Start Up Loans process, rushing often causes delays, not faster outcomes.

Applications usually slow down when:

  • documents don’t align
  • evidence is missing or unclear
  • assumptions are optimistic but unsupported

This isn’t about getting things “wrong”.

It’s about preparation not being finished yet.

What matters before you apply

Assessors review what’s written and evidenced.

They can’t:

  • fix documents
  • reconcile figures
  • interpret intent
  • fill in gaps later

Once an application is submitted, opportunities to clarify are limited.

Why Goodman Corporate

Our support is provided at no cost to applicants.

We are funded through partnerships within the wider business support ecosystem, not by charging individuals starting their businesses.

This allows us to focus on what’s right for you, not on pushing you to apply.

Your first funding, done properly.
