Asset Finance

Using cash to buy assets your business needs to operate is rarely the right decision. Asset finance keeps your cash where it creates more value.

talk to us about asset finance

Asset finance allows businesses to acquire the equipment, vehicles, and machinery they need to operate and grow without using cash reserves or disrupting existing credit facilities. The asset itself typically secures the finance, which makes it accessible even for businesses that might struggle with unsecured lending.

We arrange asset finance across every sector and asset type, from individual pieces of equipment through to large fleet and plant acquisitions.

The main types of asset finance we arrange

Hire Purchase (HP)

You pay for the asset in instalments and own it outright at the end of the term. The asset appears on your balance sheet and you can claim capital allowances. Suited to assets you intend to keep long-term.

Finance Lease

The lender owns the asset and you lease it for an agreed term. At the end you can extend the lease, return the asset, or in some cases purchase it. Keeps the asset off your balance sheet in some circumstances.

Operating Lease

A shorter-term lease, typically used for assets where technology or specification changes quickly. The lender takes the residual value risk.

Refinancing existing assets

If your business owns unencumbered assets or assets with equity in them, these can be refinanced to release working capital. A practical option for businesses that need liquidity and have assets that can support it.

When asset finance is the right choice

  • You need equipment, vehicles, or machinery to operate or grow
  • You want to preserve cash and existing credit lines for other purposes
  • You are acquiring a significant asset and want to spread the cost over its useful life
  • You have assets you own outright and need to release cash against them

What to watch out for

The main issue we see is businesses not considering asset finance at all, buying assets outright when the cash could be better deployed elsewhere in the business. The rate of return on that cash, invested back into the business, frequently exceeds the cost of the asset finance facility.

We also see businesses locked into asset finance agreements that do not reflect the actual useful life of the asset either too short, creating unnecessary payment pressure, or too long, leaving them paying for an asset that is no longer fit for purpose.

How we approach it

We work with a wide panel of asset finance lenders, including specialists in specific asset classes from plant, commercial vehicles, technology to agricultural equipment.

We match the structure and the lender to the asset type and the business profile.

We arrange asset finance from a few thousand pounds through to large multi-asset acquisitions across our panel of specialist lenders.
